The problem
Each week the clocking system export was split into approver tabs by a VBA macro, then checked by hand. It was slow, brittle, and handled personal data loosely.
The approach
- Ingests the clocking export and breaks hours down by day, flagging under, over and well-below-target hours.
- Holiday and sickness counted correctly towards weekly totals.
- Generates one approval workbook per director, mirroring the existing approval structure.
- Microsoft sign-in throughout, because the data is personal.
The outcome
- Twenty-one approval packs produced in a single step.
- The macro is retired.
What they say
We split a payroll export with a macro and emailed tabs around 21 approvers. Mike replaced it with a proper application, and he designed it so the payroll file is parsed in the browser and never reaches a server. Given what is in that file, that was the right call and not one I had to ask for.
